Day in the Life

Picking the First Dance Song

I had a really, really hard time with this. This was like “our song”, the song we would be dancing together in front of everyone to and the first song we would be hearing as husband and wife. (I highly doubt Jim put that much thought into it as I had, but I digress).

Basically, it had to be perfect. Jim and I are both Christian rock (and regular rock) lovers. We even listen to some er.. harder rock (or metal) bands. I really wanted to find a song by either a Christian rock band or a band that both of us really like.

We went through several of our favorites. And found some more:

1. Not Alone by Red (I said I was going to use this one before, but we decided against it)
2. some other song by Red (I seriously forget the name, sorry Jim!)
3. Your Guardian Angel by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (this one was definitely up there!)
4. Warmness on the Soul by Avenged Sevenfold (just the fact I could find a reasonable song to play at a wedding reception was enough to get me excited)
5. Smother Me by The Used (until I really read into the lyrics. Uhh, no.)
6. Yours to Hold by Skillet (until we realized it is kind of sad and we don’t want that.)
7. Marry Me by Train (umm.. overplayed much?)
8. The Luckiest by Ben Folds (we also realized that 5000 other people used that one.)

And then I came across this song by Between the Trees called Changed by You.

I listened to it, loved it, sent it to Jim, he loved it.

WE HAVE OUR FIRST DANCE SONG.

We wanted something that nobody else would have and that was sung by a rock band. Between the Trees is more of an alternative “punk” band, but I’m still so happy with what we have chosen. We’re going to shorten it a bit since we really don’t want to have to dance for almost 5 minutes with everybody staring. At least Jim doesn’t :)

And here’s the lyrics:

Please wait while I slowly untie my tongue tonight
I pray by some feeble my words would tell you what my heart has to say
‘Cause you’ve always been right beside me for so many days
How could I be without you now?

‘Cause I am changed by you
The more I get to know you
The more I want you close to me
And I’ll take care of you
Please just say you’ll let me
Forever be whatever you need

And so if you’re supposed to get what you deserve in life
And you came just in the nick of time
God’s grace has overtaken me
My love, needless to say, I am blessed by you
‘Cause you are the one, you are the one that I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been waiting for

And I am changed by you
The more I get to know you
The more I want you close to me
And I’ll take care of you
Please just say you’ll let me
Forever be whatever you need

You melt my fears away
And reach inside me with your eyes
And light a burning fire
And I cannot stop staring

And I am changed by you
The more I get to know you
The more I want you close to me
And I’ll take care of you
Please just say you’ll let me
Forever be whatever you need

I love, love, love it! What was your first dance song? Did it take a lot of trying to find the perfect one?

What an awesome selection of songs! Yours to hold was on our list too, we actually saw them live and they did a duet between the lead singer and his wife but we couldn’t find that version anywhere. I like the one you chose (I’ve not heard it prior to today). We didn’t make a big deal over our first song. We had a ton we loved but none were slow dance-appropriate. We ended up picking Gavin Rossdale “Love Remains the Same” but our first choice was Yellowcard’s “Dear Bobbie” – too fast for a slow dance though and we thought it might be too morbid. We honestly haven’t even listened to our first dance song, our cake cutting song was our favorite and probably holds the more special meaning from our wedding (Relient K – Must Have Done Something Right).

  2. I really like it and love the personalization behind it! Picking songs was SO hard for us (the mother of the groom song was so hard to find that, when we did, we BOTH cried lol!). But our first dance song was easy because we already had it as ‘our’ song- You and Me by Dave Matthews Band.

  3. Those lyrics are beautiful!

Our first dance song is “Emotionally Yours” by Bob Dylan (here’s the story: http://theroadhomewv.blogspot.com/2009/08/music-monday_7048.html)
